Last night, Kay and I headed to No Commission London. The event is hip hop legend Swizz Beatz's Art Fair dedicated to putting the power back into the Artist's hands by charging exactly it's namesake - charging no commission. It's a meaningful initiative that is making change in the art world, and I know that I was particularly interested in experiencing art in an inclusive, interactive space. So far, No Commission has been stateside, and so I welcomed the debut of such an intentional event in London.
The night began at 5PM, allowing potential buyers to view the art on display before the party started - by midnight, over half of the pieces had been sold! It was comforting to see familiar faces and exciting to meet new friends while discussing the creativity around us. The vibes were created by performances from Blood Orange and Emeli Sande, as well as Swizz on the decks. The art on display included DANK, Lucy Sparrow and Ricardo Cavolo, whose work you may recognise from Kaytranada's 99.9% album cover. We ended up staying right till the end, which is always a sign of a good night! As an initiative with pure purpose and a refreshing way to absorb art, I look forward to experiencing No Commission again in the near future.
